How to Plan For Your Family Portrait Session
So it’s time for Family Photos.
I know this can feel a little overwhelming, especially if your have young kids. But fear not! I have a list for you to help make your family photo experience a smooth one. I cannot tell you how many families I have worked with who were nervous going in and left making comments like “wow, that was actually fun!”
Remember, this is the only time your family will be these ages. Time is a thief and photography gives us the ability to freeze a frame in our stories to treasure and pass down for generations to come. It’s all worth it!

book your photographer in advance
Remember that summer and fall are very busy seasons for photographers. Planning your session in advance will insure securing your spot as well as leave room for planning. You will be able to avoid any added stress and be able to book those haircuts, manicure appointments, and get that outfit shopping done with peace of mind.
Choose your outfit first
Chances are, choosing your outfit is going to be the most challenging part of outfit planning and that’s ok! Plan the whole shoot around your outfit. It’s important that you feel good and confident.
Coordinate > Matching
When picking out your family’s remember to coordinate, but not match. When planning outfits for a group it is important to avoid pattern parties and remember that neutrals, earth and jewel tones are your friends! Try to avoid neons, graphics/logos, and identical matching outfits. You can mix solids with a pattern, just make sure to stick to a color scheme. Click here for a little inspiration.
Make sure everyone is well rested and fed
While it may not always be possible, I suggest that parents try and book a time slot that ensures their littlest family members have napped well. Try to avoid letting any littles falling asleep in the car. It’s also important to make sure everyone has been fed. Family Photo day is the worst day for anyone to be hangry. Hold off on any candy until after the shoot— you don’t want any blue tongues making a debut on your beautiful photos.
bring snacks
Oh, the magic of a snack! Make sure to pack some of these when preparing for your family photo session. Especially if you have toddlers! Not all snacks are created the same when it comes to a photo session. Make sure to only pack snacks that are not super sticky or messy. Some great ideas include: string cheese, puffs, raisins/fried fruit, apple slices, etc. I know crackers may sound like a good option but beware, they can get stuck in their teeth.
Plan Something Fun Afterwards
Pump your kids up before the session even starts! Family photos don’t have to be boring— and they won’t be if you book with me *wink. I love kiddos and have extensive experience working with children. Something I encourage my clients to do is to plan something fun for afterward— make a little day of it. Don’t worry, you don’t have to use it as a bribe. Honestly, when you tell a child that “if they good they will get a treat” it already sets them up mentally that they are going to hate it. Use the verbiage that you’re going to have some family play time while your friend is taking pictures and afterwards you’ll have some more fun (whether that be going out for a treat or having a family game/movie night). Remember, not everyone has to be smiling and looking at the camera the whole time. While I will of course do some classic posed shots, I actually prefer to capture the organic candid moments the most.
