How to Plan for your Senior Photos

I really wanted to start this blog post out singing “schoooollllsss out for the suuuuummmerrr!” But it’s April as I write this. Thank you for letting me get that out of my system.

When it comes to portrait photography, I have to admit— senior sessions are some of my absolute favorites! Senior photos are more than just a right of passage—they’re a celebration of everything you’ve accomplished and everything that’s ahead. This is such a unique moment in your life, and your senior session is your chance to freeze it in time. So let’s talk about how to plan a senior session that truly reflects you.

Show Off Your Style (and Your Personality)

The best senior photos feel like you. That means choosing outfits and details that show off your personality, your interests, or even the future you’re stepping into. Whether you’re sporty, artsy, laid-back, or full-on glam, lean into it. Bring multiple outfit options—think casual, dressy, and maybe something bold or trendy if you’re feeling it.

Bonus points if you bring along a prop that tells part of your story! Props are such a fun way to make your session feel more personal. Whether it’s your guitar, basketball, truck, or your pup—we can incorporate what you love in a natural, beautiful way.

Here are a few fun prop ideas:

  • Sports gear, uniforms, or instruments

  • Cap & gown (great for some “official” shots)

  • Favorite hobbies: sketchbooks, books, cameras, art supplies

  • Furry friends (yes, dogs are always welcome! I have even worked with quite a few horses!)

  • A picnic blanket or cozy layers for sitting shots

Whatever tells your story—we’ll make space for it.

Pick a Location That Means Something to You

Sure, I can recommend gorgeous spots (and trust me, Alaska has no shortage!), but choosing a location that’s special to you can make your photos even more meaningful. Maybe it’s your favorite hiking trail, the beach you grew up visiting, a place where you feel most like yourself—or even your family’s backyard. Let’s create a session that feels like your world.

Book in Advance for the Best Experience

Senior sessions fill up fast, especially during the summer and early fall when the light is golden and the weather’s beautiful. Booking early guarantees your spot and gives us more time to collaborate on outfits, locations, and your overall vibe. We’ll plan the best time of day for lighting, talk through your vision, and make sure everything is lined up so the day of your shoot is all fun, no stress.

Why Senior Photos Matter

Your senior year is a huge milestone—one that deserves to be celebrated and remembered. These photos aren’t just for a yearbook; they’re keepsakes your family will treasure, images that you’ll look back on when you want to remember exactly who you were at this turning point in your life. It’s about capturing your confidence, your energy, your story. And trust me—there’s nothing better than having photos you feel proud of.

If you’re ready to plan a senior session that feels like you, I’m here to help guide you every step of the way. Let’s create something beautiful that you’ll never forget. Reach out today to grab your spot!
